I started on the resolution table. This covers most all common single screen resolutions, organized by aspect ratio. First of all, head on over to http://www.whatismyscreenresolution.com/ Once you know that, find it on the LEFT in the below list, and use the resolution on the RIGHT for Wallpaper. Your Res | Wallpaper Res ------------------------- 320x480 - iPhone 320x240 - 1152x864 640x480 - 1152x864 768x576 - 1152x864 800x600 - 1152x864 1024x768 - 1152x864 1280x960 - 1152x864 1400x1050 - 1152x864 1600x1200 - 1152x864 2048x1536 - 1152x864 1280x1024 - 1280x1024 2560x2048 - 1280x1024 1600x1200 - 1600x1200 854x480 - 1920x1080 1280x720 - 1920x1080 1920x1080 - 1920x1080 320x200 - 1920x1200 1280x800 - 1920x1200 1440x900 - 1920x1200 1680x1050 - 1920x1200 1920x1200 - 1920x1200 2560x1600 - 2560x1600 Oh yeah, and Ryan, maybe steal that JS script off the above site and somehow integrate it so that when you click an image link it checks your resolution then serves you up the appropriate match? Shouldn't be too hard. |

There aren't tooooo many resolutions out there. So, why don't you make a quick little chart with each resolution (from iPhone to tripe-widescreen) and then the matching resolution you should use from DB. Or even better, let members set a default resolution for their account, so wallpapers auto-default to the matching resolution (or at least the next highest res with the same aspect ratio) when clicked...no thinking required. Having computer noobs divide complicated numbers they might not even know in the first place is just asking for trouble! It took me some thinking with my 1440x900 widescreen laptop to figure it out, so I can just imagine those who are less technically inclined! |

One thing I find annoying that OS X could use is a fill screen option that maintains the aspect ratio but fits the image on the screen in its entirety (by letter-boxing or pillar-boxing the image with a background colour). I've created a fairly simple solution that people using OS X can use. If you're interested follow the instructions below: 1. Copy the text from http://abryzak.org/resizescript.txt into Script Editor (found under /Applications/AppleScript) 2. Change the numbers in the first two lines to match your settings, the first number is the size of the image you download (in my case I get the large 2560 ones) and the second number to the width of your screen (in my case the resolution of my powerbook is 1440x960 so I set it to 1440), make sure you don't remove the quotes in the first line. 3. Save the script under /Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts/ or the equivalent path in your home directory 4. Create a folder to keep the resized images in (I use Pictures/Wallpapers/Digital Blasphemy (1440x900) ) 5. Control-click on the new folder and choose the Attach a Folder Action... item 6. Select the script you saved earlier and press Choose 7. Now when you download an image, copy it (don't move or else you will lose the original) into this folder and it will automatically resize it for you If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at abryzak@gmail.com |

Thanks for adding these versions. I have a 20" iMac with this aspect and I was using the 1920x1200 but knew I was either losing a bit of the picture if I centered it or distorting the original. And yeah for OS X on the Mac (I have 10.3 at hand) your choices are: Fill Screen (Maintains aspect) Stretch to Fill Screen (Loses aspect) Center Tile Speaking of Macs... I use iPhoto to organize my backgrounds. I can create albums of themes (Halloween, Christmas etc.) as well as rate individual ones and add keywords. When setting up the background pictures I can choose regular albums (not smart in 10.3 anyway) and set the background to change periodically. So I can quickly choose a spring or fall collection without having to hassle with individual files. |
