The Mind Lamp looks very interesting! I will suggest to Jessie as a possible birthday present for me (coming up in Sept)... Thanks Harry. |
||
| Harry |
Your workspace has a warm feeling. The lava lamp has me wondering if you would enjoy a Psyleron Mind Lamp. I think it would do well in your office space and offer interesting possibilities. I'm a fan of Psyleron's SyncTxt service which is another way to play with synchronicity. |

Hi. I've been a member off and on since you started. Your work is amazing. I get tons of comments on your images. Keep up the good work! |

OOOPS! in my comment below i meant SUCH PLACE OF WORK and not suck place... SORRY Ryan!! |
||
| Miguell026 |
Wonderful workplace you have at home! love your chair ( mine is a crappy one =P) love the lavalamps ( always wanted one) great comfortable corner you have there Ryan! you're a lucky man to have suck place of work near the family! |

I've been following your work since 1999. I don't know how to explain it but something goes out of your wallpapers. I don't know if this is the passion u got for your work but i have always used ure creations to customize my desktop wall. Thank you for what ure doing ryan. |

Ryan, it occurred to me that the color palette of "inner workings" applied to "containment" would be a beautiful update of one of your classics. Just a thought |
||
| Mike |
Yeah, there was a lot more speakers available a few years back. I've gone to an optical out to a small receiver with a couple of Infinity Primus 150s sans a sub, just straight 2 channel. I need a desk like that! My old kitchen table is lame. Love your stuff, and thanks! |
||
Ryan |
I do like them (even though my original subwoofer died and I had to dig one up on eBay). Is it me or are there less good options for computer speakers today than there were 5 years ago? |
||
| BG |
Nice workspace and nice speakers! I have the M-Audio Studiophile LX4s (2.1). They sound really nice, too bad they discontinued them... |
||
Ryan |
Thanks for the tip Dan. Do they make special speaker stands that auto-adjust depending on your slouch? |
||
| Dan |
Mount your studio monitors so that the tweeters are at ear height. You will hear them *much* more clearly. Studio monitor speakers are a tricky beast - powerful yes, but very directional, intended for being set up and used in a finely controlled environment. Ideally, they will both be pointed straight at your head and 6 feet apart, forming a perfect equilateral triangle. This is considered the most accurate monitoring setup. If there are rear reflex ports, they should have at least 2-3 feet of air behind them before you hit a wall. For reference, empty Quaker Oats cans work great as speaker stands: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=385573423036&set=t.22336144104 |

Thanks, Ryan. I thought that was what it was. They're expensive, though, but I guess when you spend as much time as you do in it, it's worth the cost. |
||
Ryan |
...is a "Herman Miller Aeron". It's very comfortable! |
||
| KurtM |
Who makes that chair you use at the desk and what is the model number and/or name? |
||
| KurtM |
Ryan, You mentioned hooking up an XM satellite radio. I think the variety offered by Live365 (www.live365.com) is much better and it's cheaper to boot. |
||

Wouldn't you know it, I find what I needed right after I posted. |

First, let me say: "Love your work!" I was wondering what you use for software or what would you recommend? I seem to recall you had a section before showing what you used, but I couldn't find it. |

Hey Ryan, I've been a member for maybe a year, but have always looked in wonder at the free side since about 2000. Was wondering what computer specs you have in your system as of now and your thoughts on APPLE as a design platform. Was also wondering if this is your full-time work or if you're doing other things and "this" as a hobby. Hope to hear from you soon - Ciao! |

Is there any possibility you could do what you did with the firefox personas and make them as google chrome themes? My understanding with google chrome themes is that they are only done when google requests them from the artist. |

I know I might be like a teenage Beatles fan when I post this, but I really want to know more, to kind of pick your brain so to speak. You have replied to some of the links here, but when I read "Ali's" comment about tutorials or interviews, it made me realize how much your fans (and I) don't know about you. Comments on your art history would be great. Mostly, I am just wondering what you do to be inspired, and what inspired you to be an artist in the first place. Thanks. Christy Member for Life. PS. Definately a HUGE fan of all of your abstracts... Issuance, my favorite because of the use of color, was on an old laptop of mine, a friend glanced at it and had thought I had smashed my laptop screen... He is now a fan too. |

I currently run dual Quadro FX5500s. |

Life time member here, first or second time commenting, what is the graphics card(s) of your rig? |
||
| psithurism |
... go wacom tablets! lol - i'm a professional photographer/retouch artist - your setup looks like the PC version of mine - digital artists rule :) |
||
Ryan |
You can resize the images in an image editor (such as Photoshop or Paint.net). Hope this helps! |
||
| Alan |
Hi there, Just like to know if there is a way for me to reduce a given resolution of a wallpaper? The reason why I'm asking is that I would just like to download the highest pixel wallpapers and then reduce them for whatever screens I may need in the future. That way I can avoid downloading zip files of different resolutions of the same wallpapers. Please let me know thanks Alan |

Really nice office, Ryan. I too like the triptych of the 'shrooms. My office is not nearly so visitor-friendly, i.e. it's a lot messier than yours. I have an L-shaped desk with the PC, scanner, and workhorse HP LaserJet. Next to it along the wall is a printer stand with my two Epsons, a photo inkjet and my 16-year-old 24-pin (great for read-once web pages on cheap paper). On the other side of the desk is a second stand with a fax, USB phonograph for copying LPs and 45s, and my shipping scale. The closet has storage shelves, and the rest of the room is tall bookcases. IRT the Request that another Ryan made in October, my old Sony VAIO Picturebook came with an HTML wallpaper that could be used under Windows up through XP as an Active Desktop. Vista doesn't let you do that anymore; it has Widgets, or Gadgets, or something - probably trying to emulate Apple. You might be able to run it in your browser and keep the window maximized. Anyway, the HTML code samples the clock and rotates four images for Day, Evening, Night and Dawn. If time is > X but <= Y, show dawn.jpg, etc. Originally it had versions of the VAIO logo, but I hacked it and I use four images of the Statue of Liberty. It was an exercise in HTML, and a lot of fun to do. I also like the wide variety of screen sizes. I use the png for my 15" 4:3 PC monitor, the HDTV for my new laptop, and the mobiles for my Zune and Motorola Q. For the old Picturebook, I still do some editing in ThumbsPlus Pro to get the 1024 x 480 it uses. Either I crop a dual widescreen or a tri-screen, or I squish the HDTV, or I add to and stretch the sides, or some combination, depending on the composition of the individual image. I have five versions of all my (many) favorites. If there is such a thing as a "healthy" addiction, I've found it with Digital Blasphemy. Thanx! |

I have been enjoying your wallpapers sine 1998 and I have yet to be let down by the quality of your work. Keep it up! I have many friends at my office that ask where I get these wallpapers from and they always say how great it looks. Keep it up! |

Hello Ryan, Just want to say you really do good work. Someone sent me a photo of one of your work. I went to your website and saw some more of your good work. I wanted more of your digital masterpieces so I bought a membership. I can get the pictures free elsewhere but I'm a bit old fashioned and prefer to pay for your screensaver membership. The same thing goes when I purchase music online. It bothers me when one get a mess of songs for free. I prefer to pay for the songs I download. I am a semi-retired graphic designer so I do have an appreciation for art. Keep up the good work, Ryan. Ross Ferguson |

Hello Ryan, I am a life member no doubt. I just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your art. My computer is full of your work. I am glad to read that you are doing well. You have a very nice office...Lucky You!!!! This might be a silly question...How do I learn how to do this type of Art? Not that I want to take away from you. I just thought it would be a neat past time sense I am a stay at home mom... Again I just wanted you to know that... I LOVE YOUR ART!!!!!! Peace to you & yours, Laura Vitale Lifetime Member Happy Halloween!!!!! |

Hi Ryan, Love your work. I particulary enjoy instances where you display the same landscape in a daytime and nighttime scene. Listen, if you find a way to create a graphic that displays a landscape scene that can transition from day to night on a 24 hour cycle - I would pay. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Again, great work. Keep em coming and I'll keep subscribing. Sincerely, Ryan |

Every now & then I come back to see whats new. You create incredible images... ... Thankyou !! |

Simple and spacious. It's much less cluttered than my workspace; I should try inserting a couch into my work area. Then again I'd probably wind up using the couch more than actually getting work done :(. Keep up the good work. Cheers, John |

I second the request that you make the other colors of 'flourescence' available. I never really 'got' the image until I DL'd the holiday version. Wow. A new favorite image. (I admit I also like the older image because at 1280, it gets 'stretched' to fit my widescreen. In this case, that bit of distortion works.) FYI, the new 'see all' gallery with the thumbnails is a great addition. Makes images much easier to find. There's nothing like finding an 'old' treasure in images from years past. Keep up the great work. |

Your workspace is amazing and for the past six year or so since I first saw your site on the recommendation of a friend, I've been steadily impressed, and now I know where it all happens. As time has gone by, I've noticed that although the number of wallpapers in recent years may have dropped, but at the same time, the wallpapers that do get rendered and released are simply the best. Quality takes time. Keep up the good work! |
||
| muse.ings |
NICE! I love the DB mascot on the wall. Too bad all the colors aren't available. I would LOVE to have them. Nothing says creativity like glowing 'shrooms! |
||
| Ali |
>>Yes, I only use one monitor. Call me old fashioned... Haha, only one? It's big enough to count as 4! Now that we have Facebook, are you going to post tutorials or interviews at your workspace? We've never even heard your voice. |
||
| Drayton |
Let me just tell you, after being a member for I think 4 years now, I still can't get enough of what you create. I love how you evolve as well too. You make accommodations for just about everything. I use to only be able to get desktop wallpaper, but now you gone as far as making it available for nearly every capable mobile device. So now I can use on my Zune etc! Your animation stuff is awesome too. Where do you find the time? Your website kicks ass! Just about everything is awesome. As for your workspace, I'm totally jealous. But someone like you deserves a nice place to create and do business. Well keep up the great work and God bless you and your family. Thank you, A member for life!!! Drayton )i( |

I just wanted to drop you a line and say: great work! I love your work, and I plan to re-up my membership for another year. |

I have wanted to send you a comment since I became a member approximately 2 years ago. I think your work is absolutely AMAZING. I truly wish you could create new artwork everyday. But reality is you can't and I will just have to patiently wait for the next piece of greatness to be posted. You may have commented on this before but for those of us that do not share your gift of creativity could you give some inside into how you create your artwork? I have seen you refer to using different computer programs but how do you actually make the artwork. Do you sketch out a drawing or copy and paste together different images? If it is a creative secret I understand if you prefer to keep it to yourself. I am sure many of your fans are curious. Finally, because I think so highly of your artwork I tell anyone and everyone to check out your website. There are thousands of sites on the web that offer free wallpaper but none compares to the quality of yours. Keep up the great work! I am looking forward to see what's next :D |
||
| Mangoman23 |
Nice work area. I can tell now why the quality of your art sets such a high standard. You ARE quality: The brand of speakers (great sound, not listener fatigue), the quality and amount of computing power, the high quality (and unbelievable comfort) of your chair, which translates to again, quality results instead of physical fatigue, the custom desk, etc. What you see in the picture, fans, is "The Good Stuff". It goes hand in hand with Ryan doing the WOW images he does. Kudos to you, my man. My wife and I have nothing but DB stuff on our machines. |
||

Def. a cool work space. Love the spec's on the comp,and yeah... 1 monitor FTW. Anyways, I'd continue to pay the yearly fee even if you didn't add a new wall paper, cause they're all pretty much amazing. =) I wish I had artistic talent. Keep up the good work! |

I know I have committed the sin of all sins by allowing myself the luxury of eating my breakfast, lunch, or dinner whilst at my computer. I do drink coffee in the morning and herbal tea when the hours are late. Your desk is "clean" of such luxuries. I basically have the desk size and general lay-out as yourself. But, hidden in my "recycle closet" are a modicum of peripherals. These are peripherals which have simply died, having never been exposed to "food elements" or "liquid elements", as I have strictly designated a portion of my desk space to "food and liquid only." No question, just statement. |
||
Ryan |
Yeah, I probably shouldn't have deleted "Member's" comments. I was a little angry when I read them though and, as has been pointed out, the assertion that I only do six renders in a year is false. I certainly don't expect all the comments to be positive. However, if you have criticisms I would expect them to be constructive and based on facts. Now, as I have said before and will continue to say whenever someone questions my "output": If you don't think I have added enough new artwork during your membership term you are free to let your account expire. I would probably have much nicer "digs" if all of the memberships were set to auto-renew but I would rather each member assess whether or not I have earned the renewal. If I haven't added enough new artwork then let your account expire and come back in a year or two and renew for the same $15 rate if you wish. It's as simple as that. |
||

First off, Ryan, your workspace is amazing, I wish I had the room to have a desk that size. I really do like the 3 color variations of Fluorescence. The second you offer them for sale, I'll buy a set! I'm looking forward to your next wallpaper, I'm particularly partial to the apparently less popular abstracts and planetscapes, they make excellent desktop backgrounds. The animation you are working on sounds intriguing and I look forward to seeing it. Thankfully I have also recently upgraded my somewhat ancient PC to a dual quad core behemoth, so I'll be able to enjoy it and not have the rest of my system come to a grinding halt! On a side note in regards to some comments below, I recently renewed my membership for another year, and then a few days later decided to get a lifetime membership. When I originally became a member some years ago, I recall reading in your membership FAQ that the membership is for all of the work you have produced up to the point of signing up and anything new is a bonus. Sure enough, that part of the FAQ is still there. I'm grateful that you continue to inspire with your creativity. |

If people saw my desk they would probably die! The fact that you can see the wood on your desk is impressive to me (you can't see it on mine). Anyway, can't wait to see the new image. As a fairly new member, I have yet to be disappointed! |
||
| Pat |
I don't really agree with the deleting of comments that haven't any profanity or spam in them. Either we can voice our opinions or not, can't really have it both ways. That being said, the statement was obviously ridiculously rude and inaccurate, and I'm shunning myself at the moment for devoting this much attention to it so I'm going to stop now. In the end, though, I think Mr. Logical is right. It's not my website, so, Ryan, do whatever you want with the comments. Oh and by the way, as far as quantity is concerned, I think the standards being set here are absolutely insane. Guys, this is art! This stuff isn't being made in a factory somewhere. I'd take quality any day. Speaking of which - Island Time... Awesome. Keep up the good work, dude. |
||
| Logical |
Member, I don't think you are being entirely accurate in your statements. Ryan has posted eight wallpapers this year already- not six a year like your post claimed. That's probably why it was deleted. Besides, Ryan can delete any comment he wants- it's his website. |
||
| Lottery |
Nice workspace, I like the specs on the machine. You should hold a lottery and give it away (to me)!!!! ; ) J/K I love your work, keep it up! |
||
| Member |
Why was my post deleted? Not all of the comments posted should hail the genius! I mearly said nice digs for a guy who posts 6 renders a year.It's a fact. |
||
| Mike |
Thanks for posting the pics! I enjoyed seeing where you create all the beautiful artwork :) Those prints of different color Fluorescence on the wall are so cool! |
||
Ryan |
I use the Wacom tablet for a number of tasks: Adding detail to 3d models in Zbrush, creating terrains in Vue, and for editing 2D texture maps in Photoshop. For traditional "drawing" tasks it is much easier than a mouse. My desk is usually a little messier than this. Jessie thinks I'm a slob and doesn't buy the "genius" argument for one minute. I'll see what I can do about adding the "Fluorescence" triptych to Zazzle. I'd probably remove the "digital blasphemy" text from the blue plate though. |
||
| Nick |
Ryan, I love your definition of mess when applied to your office. You should see the stacks of paper covering my desk and floor everywhere in sight :) On the other hand, I do have four of your posters hanging around that keep me sane. Thanks as always for your work! |
||
| Gerry |
Most geniuses are untidy :) |
||
| Fumo |
My roommate also has a Wacom tablet and swears by it, even though you're doing a lot more graphical stuff with it. Very nice workspace. I've had my Dell flat panel for a few years now, and although not quite as large as yours, I know that's a high-quality display. I'm jealous! On the subject of Zazzle, I'd love for you to put some of your work on Cafe Press too! I have a few old DB mousepads that are starting to wear out, plus it'd be great to get some of your newer work and keep it on my desk! Any chance you'd set anything like that up again anytime soon? |
||
| Yanthor |
I think I speak for others when I say that we'd love it if those variants on the wall could be added to your Zazzle gallery! :-) Some of us without your level of creativity wouldn't have thought of that setup on our own, but now that we see it we covet it. lol. |
||
| Dave |
Nice work Station. I was surprised to see you only have the one monitor :) Building anew extension that includes a new office, thanks for the ideas. |
||
| Tuishimi |
Heh, is that the one with the high fever and you feel sleepy for two days straight? That one is ripping through us right now. School is a breeding ground of every nasty bug you can imagine, which our kids promptly share with us. LOL! Hope y'all feel better! |
||
| AMDbuilder |
I'm not going to comment on the AMD/Intel subject other than who cares what he uses the outcome is the same! (It's switching to a new wallpaper that's the problem...) Anyways, I have a tablet as well and it's wonderful for working with Photoshop/Illustrator, but I can't see myself using it for web design. I guess you could get a smaller one and use it as a mouse replacement as holding a pen is more natural than using a mouse or trackball. I guess it's all personal preference, but IMHO it's not worth it for general computing as you don't need the control (for lack of better word/thought) |
||
| Will |
First, boo Intel... (easy Intel fans, I am not trying to start anything). Why not AMD? Anyway, looks like a good set up. I am not a graphic designer, but I spend lots of time in my home office doing web design, but yours makes me feel sad when I look at mine. I have thought about getting a tablet, but have not had a reason yet. I assume you like yours, but is it everything it seems to be cracked up to be. |
||
| AMDbuilder |
You call that desk a mess... That's a clean desk in my book! I would post a picture of my desk, but let's just say... well you don't want to see it... Regardless it's cool to see your work space! I know I love those HM chairs!!! I look forward to your next masterpiece! |
||
| Lidia |
Nice workspace! I'm so happy you posted it here. I was sad when you posted it on Facebook and I couldn't see it - I absolutely refuse to get a Facebook account. The "Fluorescence" variations make a great backdrop. You should make them available in your Zazzle gallery, particularly the green one. |
||
Ryan |
The chair is a Herman Miller Aeron. I got it from Sit4less.com. |
||
| Chad |
I want those pics, hanging on my wall, by the end of the day. Make it happen! |
||
| Todd |
Ryan - What type chair is that? My current one has seen better days but I need one that is comfortable for 8-10 hours. Great setup! |
||
Ryan |
If I had more than one monitor I wouldn't be able to look out of my window. |
||
| Gary |
I would love to have an office that looked so good, but why don't you have dual monitors? |
||
| Topher |
I have one of those monitors, and it's amazing. A large one is WAY better than 2 smaller ones. Especially with virtual desktops. |
||
| Matt |
Me... want... desk! |
||
| david |
you compute in a dream world, lucky. |
||
| Jeremy |
Looks like you have a nice place to work there. I'm surprised at the single monitor, considering your double- and triple- screen wallpapers. Oh and it's nice to see a graphic designer who doesn't have Apple equipment everywhere :) |
||
| Aelver |
Very nice workspace Ryan! Looks very conducive to creativity. Keep up the good work, and don't fret the long renders. Good things come to those who wait :) |
