Growing up on the flat Illinois prairie I developed a healthy fascination with cumulonimbus clouds. I often imagined that they were mountains in the distance, or that they concealed giants. They were definitely the tallest structures to be seen in a world of distant horizons.

This piece continues my exploration of how to create these clouds using Vue d'Esprit. I was going for a sunset look here, with the clouds lit from a low angle. Hope you enjoy it!

Nice, though the mistiness of the clouds makes me think I should be cleaning my glasses so I can see properly :) .

Very soft muted colours

Kind of surrealistic. It looks like the view on a foreign world where the colors are out of place.

Love this, great outdoor feel. Clouds are great - can feel the layers. Now I have this one at home also.

Wow, Ryan, you've been creating such splendid art this year (as you do every year); this is another one that people will mistake for a photo. Lovely work!

It reminds me of a Maxfield Parrish painting. Very dreamy - great work, Ryan!

Reminds me of a nuclear explosion set off by the US at Bikini Atoll in the 50's.........still pretty impressive though

"It Could be a painting"
I like it. Dreamy, serene, yet to those who know clouds, Bang. Still say could be a painting. It's that beautiful.

Thanks Ryan.

"Fascinating Clouds"
I have always been fascinated by cloud formations, and even though I live in Western Washington and don't see shapes like this, the scene captures the tranquility that I feel any time I have a chance to pause and truly admire the natural beauty of clouds. Thank you so much for this piece!

"No sunset"
I love your naturescapes, but this one doesn't do it for me. I don't like the sunset pink of the clouds. I'd prefer to see this with the colour palette of "Thunderhead". I think that would make it far more portentous!

"I agree with Ryan"
It needs to carry more menace.

Perhaps darker clouds at the base of the anvil? That might be achieved by backlighting a sunset version...

"Good start"
I love the landscape but it still feels a little dull, the sky is my main criticism though. It needs more "drama"; more contrast, more life, something that makes it be a focal point and "fire" in the picture.

"Only a 7 for me"
Although the cloud is good the overall feel of this render is a bit plain for my taste. I really wanted to like this one as your naturescapes are always my favorites in your work, but I just couldn't get that excited about this one.

Yes I really Love this landscape render, it reminds of the bicycle ride around Lake Michigan, with a side trip to TN, some of the bicycle routs took me through places like this, Great Render Ryan

"Absolutely fantastic"
Living in Lousiana and now southeast Texas, I get to see similar formations. My current work is focused on clouds as well, as they are so fascinating and breathtaking. Wonderful job on this one. I think it has now become my favorite of yours.

"Just like home"
Living in Oklahoma, I see storms like this outside my living room window all the time. This realistically captures the particular vibrant blue of the sky contrasted with the sunset colors on the clouds (which is quite hard to get in an actual photograph). I don't usually make requests, but can you do a pickle jar version with a lightning bolt? Pretty please?

"Anvil"
It's beautiful but it would be fun to see some more intense colors in it. Sometimes these storm can have incredible color intensity and dark, almost ominous looking cloud bottoms. Maybe a pickle jar version with more intense colors??

"Lovely"
I love this - kind of a "dreamy" feel to it. It very much reminds me of Maxfield Parrish's paintings.

They do contain giants - ones ready to smite thee to pieces if you fly too close to their lair.

I like the subtle color palette and lighting which, to me, give it a lovely painterly aspect

"Simplicity Perfected"
I love the simplicity in this scene. There's nothing distracting me from the focal point and the colours are a perfect blend of subtle and vibrant.

"Closer"
This is another one people will want to know where I took the picture. I swear with each landscape you post we get a step closer to you posting a project, then I'll post a picture of the exact same scene I had taken 2 years earlier.
