A companion piece to "Thunderhead". I used what I learned designing those cloud formations to make a convincing environment for a tornado I modeled using The Plant Factory.

"Whirlwind"
Kind of spooky looking, but with those clouds and the tornado ahead, folks better get indoors fast! Good rendering!

"Old times . . ."
This brings back memories of seeing a tornado while working on top of a grain silo in Nebraska.

Excellently done with the realism here.

"Fantastic!"
I just put the dual-screen version on my monitors at work and literally got goosebumps when I went to look at it. Great job!

"Impressive..."
This is a really impressive render. Less flashy than some of your others, but really very real looking.

""Weather" should be a new genre"
This is fantastic. "Weather" could be a new genre that you do. Living in Oklahoma, I find tornado art both fascinating yet intimidating and terrifying.

"Distant Omen"
I really like the clouds and turbulent sky on this one. It conveys a sense of distant but goring fury hidden behind the lower layers. The tornado is not as grand but I can't think of a way it could be better. The dark colors of the fields are also great. I would love to see this sky transplanted to other images, maybe this years Halloween for example.

"No more PNGs?"
Ryan, are you no longer rendering the lossless versions of the images? the last 5 or 6 haven't had them and i prefer them over the jpegs, especially on the more detailed images.

"Framing"
Really like this render. I greatly preferred the centre and right panes of the triplescreen, though. As such, I downloaded that, and cropped my own dualscreen out of it. The left pane just seems a little off to me, possibly because of the lightning.

Thanks for the heads up Richard! I've toned down the blur and fixed the titles.

"Website bug"
@Ryan: there seems to be a problem with your site titles at present. At the head of this page, the title of this image should be "Whirlwind" but it says "Bones of the Earth". And if you use the little blurred picture icons to move between images, the new pictures all get the wrong titles too. (By the way, I think those blurred previous-/next-picture icons are TOO blurred: they're so blurred that it's hard to see that they're even there, and you can't get much of an idea of what they are without pointing at them to unblur them.)

By the way, I really like the Whirlwind image myself. I think it's the best of your recent 'atmospheric' pictures; I prefer it to Thunderhead.

"Central Illinois"
I live in Central Illinois and actually requested something that spoke midwest/Illinois and I must say I am glad something has been delivered. Between the cornfields and soybean fields in Illinois, soybeans are shorter and do make for a lower view point.

Maybe a variation could be done with more of a blue glow in the clouds from the lightning. Saw some last night that were like a dark purple in the distance that filled up a wide range of the sky. And maybe some rain. ;)

Can't decide on 8 or 9. At least an 8 though.

"Memories...."
When I was 6 years old, a tornado hit Hollandale, MS. As all the adults in the home panicked, I watched the tornado cross a cotton field and wrap an aluminum boat around a tree...This reminded me of that day.....

"Steppin' out...."
I know what folks're talkin' about when (especially with weather-related images) they say the sun doesn't look like that, or it should look more windy or wavy, or (my favorite) it doesn't look "realistic". For me, a beautiful thing about art is how it can create a ladder to assist me in stepping out of reality.

Love this image, Ryan, and thanks for the cool ladder....

"Beautiful, but chilling"
Every native Oklahoman knows to fear and respect that particular sight...yet you, Ryan, gave it a fierce beauty. Like watching a hawk about to pounce. Well done!

I love the look of this. You nailed the eerie green sky, I think for some fun you could add houses, trees, cars & cows being thrown around.

If you want "realistic" go Google tornadoes on Google. If you want artistic this is it. A beautiful piece to me.

I doubt it is sun, but it's lightning lighting up the clouds!

A lovely render Ryan, I love it.

"Good, but get rid of the sun and add some wind effects"
I really like this one, but I think it would be a lot better without the sun. I've been in tornado weather many times and the sun is never out. Also it looks like the plants on the ground aren't even reacting to the winds. Overall I like the idea of bad weather images and think you should explore this further.

"Not that realistic"
The tornado must be magical as the fields don't have any indication of the wind, nor do the clouds. And there would not be a sun. I live in Missouri, on the east side of "tornado alley". I've seen my share of tornados. Better do some research on The Weather Channel.

Fantastic rendering of the actual event. I would like to suggest some lightning back in the distant center left to really set the feel for those really dark clouds that are forming.
