The Emblem Of (9/11 Tribute)
I turned 30 on 9/11. The birthday call from my Mom (which woke me at around 6:30 Pacific time) was the very definition of a rude awakening. By that afternoon the requests were coming in for a US Flag wallpaper. I had posted "September Rose" before going to bed on Sept 10.

I recall that the folks at "The Screensavers" on TechTV used this wallpaper for quite a while during the fall of '01. After it went up I received hundreds of requests of different flags of the world. Flags aren't really what I do, but I had to make an exception this one time. It was simply the most horrible day in modern memory.

Reactions to this piece have been, shall we say, "mixed" over the past 10 years. I religiously avoid discussion of political matters on this site but when your country calls you have you have to respond. The many many thanks I have received from the men and women in uniform have been all the validation I will ever require.

My favorite so far, but 10 years ago when I first saw your work I was floored. I am just now getting back to your work. I am a vet and 9/11 was the worst and that is all I have to say. You do great work! I love this site. Thanks for this tribute and thank you to all vets and others that serve!!

"Retrospective comment"
I too have always liked this one -- at least since I first found the site 2002-ish. It has been my background several times over the years during the fall, and it is again right now.

Yesterday, I had a new thought about it: if it is ever "updated," perhaps the level of the sun in the sky might be "lowered." While it might well be an effect of my settings, it seems to me that the overall ambient light level does not seem to match how high the sun is in the sky. In other words, the overall light level and color suggest a later time of day than the sun position does.

That said, if I were re-rating it today, I'd still consider it a 9.5, 'cause I still just love it. Thanks again, Ryan, well done and keep up the good work.

A friend of mine introduced me to this site, and your work, with this image in 2001. I was absolutely captivated by this image. I first saw the 800x600 resolution image and thought it was the best thing ever. I am very happy to see that it has survived in popularity to see itself be re-rendered into higher resolutions for the modern era and it still looks amazing.

Short geography and history lesson aside, this is a really great piece. I'd put it forward as a candidate for a re-render... With different trees and an old windpump which would really set it off. Of course, that's just a personal thing!

I just reviewed an old backup of mine which included all my wallpapers I used over 10 years ago and I immediately fell in love with this wallpaper again. So I went online to look for bigger versions (as I was using the 1152x864 wallpaper back then) of this great wallpaper.

Unfortunately the moment that was captured to create the 16:9 and 16:10 versions is different from the moment that was captured to create the 4:3 version. (It is not as good but still nice...)

Ryan: I would greatly appreciate it if you could create a 1920x1200 version capturing the exact same moment that was used to create the 1152x864 version!
